Ashman died in 1991, but his legacy lives on through Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop, and more.
On May 17, Disney Theatrical Group marked the 4,000th performance of Aladdin on Broadway and honored lyricist Howard Ashman on what would have been his 75th birthday.
Ashman’s musicals include Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, as well as The Little Mermaid and Little Shop of Horrors. He died in 1991 at the age of 40.
This one-night-only performance, coming at the conclusion of Aladdin, served as a tribute to Ashman, recognizing his contributions to musical theater, featuring his writing partner Alan Menken, the original Ariel, Jodi Benson, Little Shop of Horrors cast members Khadija Sankoh, Ari Groover, and Salome Smith, upcoming Beauty and the Beast tour stars Kyra Belle Johnson and Fergie Philippe, and Aladdin‘s Caleb B. Barnett as the Genie.
